Sheep and lambs grazing alfalfa

Our Farm

We raise 100% grass-fed lamb and goat meat. We believe pasture-raised is absolutely, without a doubt, better for the animals, better for the environment, better for your health—which is better for you! We make a commitment to you to NOT use pesticides on our land and to use NO grain, animal byproducts, antibiotics or hormones. Our lambs and goats grow naturally on Wisconsin meadows. The cool northern summers of the upper Midwest result in outstanding pastures that produce premium, lean lamb and goat in a healthy environment. They live in the open air and sunshine. We do not confine our livestock to stalls, on concrete or in feedlots. Quality of life for our animals is one of our main values.

Goats and sheep thrive on land unsuitable for other species or for crops. They are particularly suited to rocky, hilly terrains or desert climates where families would not have the much-needed protein or fat sources without their flocks. In many parts of the world children are responsible for the flocks from a young age. Along with milk and meat, sheep and goats provide leather for clothing, shelter, containers, utensils and musical instruments even today in the developing world.

Sheep, goats, grasses and browseable plants evolved together with herding dogs. All benefited from this collaboration—yes, even the grasses and brambles. The plants’ growth is stimulated by grazing, which efficiently removes older and less efficient grass blades, foliage and branches — opening up the plant body to the sun’s light and energy. The sheep and goats harvest a nutrient-rich salad and the plant receives a needed pruning. They complement each other, need each other and thrive together.

When you buy from Shepherd Song Farm you support environmentally friendly, sustainable agriculture, healthy, relaxed animals and the rapidly disappearing family farm.
